Must-Haves For The Modern Marketer: Student Interns

Technology evolves so quickly, meaning that marketers are always looking for ways to keep up with these advancements, and stay on top. Digital marketing is at the epicentre of Social Star’s mission, and we employ several strategies to maintain effective marketing results in keeping with the trends of the moment.

Here are our tips and insights on the must-haves for modern marketing, and how to create a successful brand in the digital age.

Whilst all of the topics we have discussed so far in our Must-Haves for the Modern Marketer series have been more strategy-based, we are finishing off with an organisation-based tip: adding a student intern to your team of staff. Young people have the home-ground advantage when it comes to social media and anything digital because they grew up with this technology. Even if the product you wish to market isn’t directed at a Gen Z crowd, they have a better understanding of the culture of different social media outlets, making them invaluable to a successful social media marketing campaign in 2022!

STUDENTS ARE MORE CAPABLE THAN YOU THINK…

Hiring a student who is only part of the way through a degree may seem daunting because they do not have any industry experience. Although they may not know how to use every program or know every strategy by its acronym, interns always come with enthusiasm. Particularly when you hire an intern that is actively seeking a job, rather than fulfilling a uni requirement, students are keen to work and learn as much as they can. They are a sponge for new knowledge, and with a little bit of training, they will be proactive, hardworking and skilled employees that will make you forget that they are only 20!

Gen Z are the key demographic for most of the fastest growing social media platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok. As participants of these platforms, they know what is trendy, what gets views and likes and what doesn’t. They can come up with creative content ideas and formulate social media strategies efficiently and effectively because it is simply second nature to them. But their only value is not in social media. Like all employees, each intern has different strengths that can be nurtured and developed by you during their time at your company. By passing on some of your wisdom, or that of someone in your team, interns can develop writing, graphic design, website development and even management skills. All it takes is a committed boss to help them reach their potential.

At Social Star, we have many interns and team leaders who are still in the middle of their university course, but work part-time with us. Our clients have found our interns to be dedicated and professional, bringing the same level of seriousness and innovation to meetings and strategy sessions. In fact, it is a team of interns that write and publish these very blogs! This goes to show that just because interns have less industry experience, it doesn’t mean that they can’t still provide immense value to a company.

OK, I WANT ONE. WHERE DO I FIND A STUDENT INTERN?

In case you haven’t heard, Social Star’s CEO, Andrew Ford, has a startup company called CampusLife, which is aimed at connecting student interns with businesses looking to hire them. In a format similar to a dating app where students and companies ‘match’ when they are both interested in connecting. We are able to bring interns who are eager to gain work experience in specific fields together with modern businesses ready to take on a new asset in their staff.

We have already placed several students successfully, and they are already bringing many benefits to the companies who employed them. The unique thing about CampusLife is that instead of the traditional wordy resume and cover letter format, we offer short videos that capture not just the interests and experience, but the personality of prospective interns, so you get a better idea if they would be a good fit for your company before you’ve even connected. Social Star also takes on some of these interns to train them if they are working as a marketing intern, meaning that the pressure of teaching the interns how to do certain things and catching them up to speed on your business is taken off you.

So what are you waiting for? Visit CampusLife to find out more and get started.
