Must-Haves For The Modern Marketer: Podcasts

Technology evolves so quickly, meaning that marketers are always looking for ways to keep up with these advancements, and stay on top. Digital marketing is at the epicentre of Social Star’s mission, and we employ several strategies to maintain effective marketing results in keeping with the trends of the moment.

Here are our tips and insights on the must-haves for modern marketing, and how to create a successful brand in the digital age.

Testing, testing 1,2,3… is the mic working? Ok let’s get started. Podcasts. With brands creating a presence on nearly every social media under the sun, it isn’t enough to simply have a good looking Instagram feed. Marketers are going above and beyond to look for innovative ways to provide voice and personality to their brand, and many are turning to podcasts. So what’s the hype with podcasts anyway… Why are they beneficial and how can you make yours stand out?

There are a lot of good reasons to start a podcast for your business. There are no business types that are more suited to podcasts than others. Everyone is trying to help their company stand out from the competition, whether it be for their personality, their expertise or their diversity. Having a podcast is a great way to humanise your company and show your stakeholders and customers that there are faces, voices, and REAL PEOPLE behind the business. Podcasts can also expand your brand offerings. For example, if you are selling a fitness product such as electrolyte water or pre/post workout meals, having a podcast about maintaining a fit and healthy lifestyle would remain on brand for the business, even if it is not directly marketing a product. This attracts customers to your brand because you can offer something unique, new perspectives, and information on top of your products.

“Ok, I hear you. But there are so many podcasts these days… How do I make mine original and interesting?” We get it, it can be hard to think of an original idea these days. But we have found that the key to a successful podcast is talking about things that are interesting to you and to your company’s ethos, don’t just talk about what you think people want to hear. Listeners can hear when someone is being inauthentic or reading off a script, and equally, they can hear when someone is extremely invested and passionate about what they are saying. With this strategy, you will build a regular and engaged listener base who share the same interests, leading to more effective communication with stakeholders than if a broader and less genuine podcast was produced.

Having a good host is also a big indicator of whether a podcast will be successful. You want someone who is relaxed and confident at the microphone, particularly if they are speaking with someone else, as listeners can sense the awkwardness of an uncomfortable speaker. Listeners will be more engaged, regardless of the content discussed, if the voices themselves are interesting, and have banter between them. Moreover, bringing personality to your brand is one of the reasons you may consider starting a podcast, it is crucial that this personality shines through in your podcasts hosts. They should be matching the energy and the image that you want to form for your brand.

At Social Star, many of our clients have podcasts, which we help record, edit, post and speak in. Not only have we seen measurable success in the reach of our clients’ brands, but we have been able to uncover more about the individuals behind the companies and subsequently improve other areas of their marketing strategy. We have resources in our co-working space to record podcasts, meaning we can take them from just an idea, to being live on all podcast platforms. This can be in addition to other marketing work with us or simply on its own. We believe podcasts are extremely valuable in broadening brand image and personality, and love helping our clients find their brands’ ‘voice’.
